M.B.B.S. — Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
The M.B.B.S. program at UM2 is a rigorous six-year course that combines foundational medical sciences with extensive clinical training. Graduates are fully qualified to practice medicine in Myanmar and many other countries.
The program is structured across pre-clinical and clinical phases, covering basic medical sciences, clinical disciplines, community health, and research methodology. Students gain hands-on experience through affiliated teaching hospitals.
Academic programs at UM2 currently run on two curricula, depending on a student's year and cohort of enrollment: a Traditional Discipline-Based Curriculum for earlier cohorts, and an Outcome-Based Integrated Curriculum for students admitted from 2020 onward. Both lead to the same M.B.,B.S. degree.
Adapted from British medical education and refined over decades at Myanmar's medical universities. Subjects are taught as standalone disciplines in horizontal modules, one academic year at a time.
Academic year breakdown:
Since 2023, the M.B.,B.S. degree is conferred after 6 years of academic study; the one-year internship follows as a separate, additional requirement before full licensure.
Basic medical sciences and clinical subjects are woven together through horizontal and vertical modules, giving students earlier clinical exposure and room for extracurricular learning.
Programme structure:
Begins with a Foundation for Science module — GCE A-level equivalent content alongside Medical Related Sciences — followed by a Principle Block. A parallel Personal and Professional Development (PPD) track runs throughout the year.
Basic medical sciences are taught as organ-system modules rather than standalone disciplines, integrated with vertical modules that continue through to the clinical years. M-1 covers the Musculoskeletal, Genetics, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Gastrointestinal/Liver/Nutrition systems. M-2 covers Haematology, Immunology, Endocrine, Renal and Reproductive systems, and Neurology and Psychiatry.
Clinical rotations in General Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Disease/Radiology/Dermatology/EENT, and Orthopedics/Rehabilitation/Forensic Medicine, with a dedicated elective period.
Clinical rotations in Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Psychiatry, together with Medicine, Geriatrics, Palliative Care, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, and Forensic Medicine, including a residential field trip.
Rotation of hospital postings across Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics, incorporating the student's Selected Component (SSC).
Compulsory one-year house surgeon training preceding full licensure.
Progress through each module and clinical year is confirmed by Student Assessment (SA) checkpoints.
Where affiliated teaching hospitals aren't yet accessible in a student's region, theory is completed online via the Moodle learning platform, with practical clinical training arranged once access to a suitable department or hospital becomes feasible.
